Jumbo whites are the ultimate winter icefishing quarry and can reach up to 8 pounds in the lakes of Switzer Provincial Park. Light line is a must and your lure should be horizontal, unless using a spoon. They will chase lures without hesitation, but have very good eyesight and will turn away if things don’t look right. Whitefish, like all trout, love movement. Lures for whites include wire worms, Russian hooks, ice worms and small silver spoons tipped with maggots for bait. However, I was pleased to find whites just about everywhere I tried there, in all depths from 5 to 30 feet of water. I caught many whitefish at Jarvis Lake, although nothing bigger than 15”. Whites were what I was after on this trip. Jarvis, Cache, Graveyard and Gregg Lakes are spread throughout Switzer Park and all have Lake Whitefish and some very nice coldwater Northern Pike. This beautiful park has four lakes that have a good population of Lake Whitefish in a wilderness setting in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains. Recently I visited William Switzer Provincial Park northwest of Hinton, Alberta. They are an important prey species for pike, walleye and lake trout. They are commercially fished in Alberta’s larger lakes, and tolerate harvest well. I’ve only targeted whites a few times in my life, but have caught them many times by accident. Pigeon, Gull, Lesser Slave, Smoke, Marie and Lac La Biche are popular destinations for Lake Whitefish. Whites are found in most of our lakes and are great table fare, especially when smoked. Ice fishing for Lake Whitefish in Alberta is second in popularity only to yellow perch.
